Mailbag: How Will Jamon Brown Adjust to RT?
July 27, 2017 02:45 AM | Myles Simmons
We're now just three days away from the beginning of training camp, with rookies reporting today and veterans reporting on Friday to U.C. Irvine. And to get you ready, we're taking your questions all week. From Monday through Friday, team insider Myles Simmons will answer one Q in this space for the question of the day. If you've got a question, send it over to Simmons on Twitter @MylesASimmons and you just might see it here on the site.

Today's question comes from Frank.

From what we saw during OTAs and minicamp, it seemed like Brown was making a fairly smooth transition over to right tackle.

It's a position he's familiar with, having played both the left and right tackle during his college days at Louisville. He said there was some rust to knock off, but with working there for the weeks he did during the offseason program, paired with whatever work he was doing over the summer break, he's likely in a good spot to handle that position full time.

"I think what you like about Jamon is his demeanor. I think he's got a great disposition where he's willing to be coached," head coach Sean McVay said during the offseason program. "He's got good movement for a big, physical player. And when he gets his hands on people, he certainly does a nice job of securing the line of scrimmage - whether that's in the run game or in protection when he jump-sets people."

While McVay said Brown will enter training camp as the starting right tackle, there may also be competition there from other players. The head coach mentioned Andrew Donnal and Pace Murphy as depth pieces that allowed the club to feel comfortable trading Greg Robinson back in June, so they may be in the mix.

But the other factor to think about is how will the players look different once they're in pads. The offseason program is important for skill development, to be sure. But it can make it a bit tougher to evaluate offensive linemen because so much of their technique and effectiveness is only apparent once they're working with pads. So that will be another important element to monitor as training camp goes on.

Thanks for your question, Frank. If you've got a question for the mailbag send it along to @MylesASimmons on Twitter and you just might see it here tomorrow.
